One Sketch, Two Cards

Hi there! It's time for my take on the Freshly Made Sketches #7 Challenge. First of all, I loved this sketch! I don't know what it was but I was really drawn to it this week. So much so that I ended up making two cards with it!

The first was a Christmas card. For this card I used a crumb cake base, layered with early espresso. Hmm..... that sounds like tiramisu! The retired Christmas Cocoa DSP made another appearance. I just love the shimmer in this paper and the white snowflakes. I stamped Dasher in Versamark and embossed him in gold. After I got done, the card seemed to be missing * something *. So I added the rhinestones on the snowflakes and I think that was it. Was it?

While I was making the Christmas card, I got a text from my daughter that she got an interview to go on Alternative Spring Break this year. She is so excited! So I had to make her a card to share in her enthusiasm.

For this card I started with a Lucky Limeade base and added a whisper white layer that I stamped with the distressed dots background stamp. I then layered on a piece of Cheerful Treat DSP and Melon Mambo cardstock. The flowers were made with the boho blossoms punch and some brights brads.

Two VERY different cards out of the same sketch! I love when that happens! Thanks to the Freshly Made Sketches team for such great inspiration.

The Sounding Joy

Hi there! Can you believe that it's time to start crafting Christmas cards? Actually, it's way past time if you have a ton to do. I usually only send out about 50 so that's still doable. I've been fiddling around with different Christmas sets to find what I want to do this year. But who am I kidding? I end up making about 5 of the same card and then getting bored and have to come up with something new anyway. I end up using all my prototype cards to actually send out so it's not too bad!

This card was made with a Soft Suede base. I then layered on a piece of DSP from the Christmas Cocoa pack from two years ago. I know, I know! But I'm trying not to hoard. I loved that paper but I need to use it up. You should always use what you have and love and not feel bad about it just because "that paper is so two years ago!". Unless it's paper from the 90s. Then you have permission to feel bad. Some of that paper was truly horrid.

Anyway. . . I inked up the star stamp from The Sounding Joy with Crumb Cake ink and stamped it onto Whisper White cardstock. Then I stamped the joy image from the same set in Versamark ink and embossed it with gold embossing powder. The panel was matted onto another piece of Soft Suede. At the bottom, I added two pieces of baker's twine that I had sponged with soft suede ink and two pieces of gold cord. Over the top of those, I added a brad from the Antique brads collection.

What I Did When I Wasn't Stamping

Hi there!

So this blog is called Janey Rocket Creates, right? It doesn't really specify that I only create cards, right? So I'm just going to take this opportunity to post something else that I created last weekend! My daughter came home from college for a weekend visit and she enlisted my help in finding her the perfect Halloween Costume for her. She is going to be Rosie the Riveter. Do you know Rosie?

Amy is a strong woman herself so this is the perfect costume for her! We were able to find a denim dress at the second-hand store that fit her like a glove. But it was a dress, not a shirt. Mom to the rescue! I cut it off and hemmed it up. Then I made a name badge to make it look more uniform-y with the name "Rosie" stitched on it. We dug around in an old box and came up with a Girl Scout badge that never made it onto her vest (whoops!) and I sewed that on to the collar. Bam! A Rosie the Riveter costume was born. Okay, well she still needs to add the pants, and the headscarf, but she's got the muscles and the attitude to pull it off! I'll be sure to add pictures of her once she emails them to me.

I'll be back a little later with another card today. It's time to start working on Christmas cards over here.

Housewarming Card for Judy

Hi there! Today's card is one I made for my sister-in-law for her housewarming party. It is a CASE from a card by CBMott at Splitcoast Stampers. I put a few of my own twists on it of course.

The most difficult part for me was trying to get the right size for the siding strips. But after a couple of tries I settled on strips that were about 1 3/8" wide. The door was created with Cherry Cobbler paper that I also sponged in the same color ink. I like the depth that sponging just the edges gives. The planters were made with the oval punch cut in half with the ends snipped off. The door knocker was made with a piece out of the Antique Hodgepodge Hardware set.

Good morning! Today I have another card that combines two challenges. The first is Freshly Made Sketches #5. I really love the sketches their design team comes up with. So easy to take inspiration from and as it turns out, there are a ton of talented people who link up each week. I have found so many new blogs to read there. Anyway, on to the card.

I also used the second half of our Chopped Challenge this week, in which our mystery ingredients were color mist, and the XL fancy flower punch. I made my own color mist by placing 7 or 8 drops of refill ink into a tiny spritzer bottle of water. I have tried it with both water and rubbing alcohol and get different results. For this cleaner card, the water worked better. And can you spy the XL Fancy Flower punch? The scallop along the left side are petals from that punch cut off in twos and lined up underneath my designer series paper. I LOVE punches that can do double duty!

Chopped Challenge #5

Okay, so this card was supposed to be for two challenges. The first being the Sweet Sunday Sketch #138 and the second being our Chopped Challenge #5. Well, let's just say that the diagonal paper element of the SSS challenge really threw me for a loop and I'm not super happy with how it turned out. It was a learning experience though! I learned that it's not so easy to cut striped paper on the diagonal freehand. And I learned that there is a real science (well, math!) to cutting diagonally and math is NOT my strong point anymore! And yes, I AM in accounting! But accounting and math are really quite different. So I am really on the fence as to whether to post it to that challenge or not.

But I AM super happy with how I used our Chopped elements! For this challenge, the mystery ingredients were the round tab punch and dazzling diamonds. I used the round tab punch in a creative way to come up with the brackets around my birthday greeting. And I used dazzling diamonds to mimic crystal cake stands on the stamped image.

And now that I have the photo all good and blown up, I can tell that I really need to get a new blade for my trimmer! No, I am definitely not using this for Sweet Sunday. Maybe I can get another card done this week instead.

I have been reading their blog for about 6 months but this is my first time actually posting my challenge card.

This is also for my Chopped Challenge #3. I actually posted out of order when I posted yesterday for our Chopped Challenge #4. Oops! Oh well. :) The items in our mystery basket were: the scalloped trim border punch, the elegant bouquet embossing folder, the large tag punch and pearls. In addition to the actual items, we were to make a vintage card. I think everything worked really well together for this challenge!

Just a Note

Hi there! Gosh, I look at this blog and have to wonder if anyone even tries to come here anymore. It has been a long time since I posted! I've still been making cards but I just haven't taken the time to photograph them before I send them off. I think this will change though because I have been trying to keep up with at least a few challenges so I'll get better about posting. Here's hoping!

This card combines two challenges. First, it is part of Card Sketch Patterns #135. I loved this because I challenged myself to make a different size card than I normally do.

The card is also for my Chopped Challenge this week. My good friend and I love the show Chopped on Food Network. The contestants are given a basket of mystery ingredients and have to come up with a dish based on those ingredients. So my friend and I do a Chopped challenge of our own. In our "basket" this week, we had to use: a square punch, the spiral border punch, staples and crystal effects. In addition, the card had to contain the colors pink and black. How did I do?

Ooh, I should have waited to take a photo of this card until my lighting was better. But waiting on good lighting sometimes puts a crimp in my motivation so it didn't happen today. Today we'll all have to use our imaginations (and squinting just so) to see how it looks in real life. Actually, you don't have to squint at all to see that my stamping is crooked. Let that be my lesson to you today that you should always stamp your images first! Then if you mess up you can turn the paper over and do it again, or start fresh. Today, I stamped last and so everything else was already there and I decided that I didn't want to start completely over. But I'll take my own advice next time!

Mixing Sets

Do you have a hard time combining sets? I do! I think it has more to do with how I store my stamps than anything else but combining two sets to make a card almost never occurs to me. Today I forced myself to do it though and I think it turned out well!

Can you see the detail in the flowers? I was able to get that texture simply by placing my punched piece on the foam that comes in the paper piercing set and pressing down into the flower with the end of a pen cap. Valentine Pinwheel

A special thanks to Dawn Griffith for inspiring this card. I love this technique and hope to use it a lot in the future. It's perfect for using up small amounts of leftover designer series paper as I have done here.

The pinwheel is created by using two 2 5/8" square pieces of cardstock (in this case red) layered on top of one another but off set. You then punch out 8 squares using the 1 1/4" square punch, 4 each of two designs. Adhering only one corner of each piece, you place them in an overlapping fashion to the cardstock. When you reach the last one, you tuck it under and you're done! It looks much more complicated than it is. Let me know if you have any questions!

The design for today's card was inspired by the card on page 18 of the new Occasions Mini Catalog. I love using our catalogs as jumping off points for my own designs.

I would have liked to use black ribbon on this card but the satin was too shiny and the grosgrain was too stiff. I really hope that we will get the seam binding ribbon in every color we carry! Wouldn't that be awesome?

Today's card is for a special mentor of mine. I hope she likes it! It was not a quick and easy card for sure but it was fun to make.

The flower was made by punching out a total of 5 scalloped circles and then folding 4 of them into fourths and then adhering those onto the fifth scallop. Before I folded them, I spritzed them with a combination of alcohol and champagne shimmer paint to give them a little shine and crumpled them up. I gave the leaves the same treatment. Fang-tastic Halloween

Hi there!

Welcome to my first Mojo Monday attempt. Okay, it's not my first CARD I've made from the inspirational sketches, but it IS the first one I've managed to post.

I love the way this card turned out.

I started with a base of Old Olive card stock and then layered it with Whisper White that was sponged with old olive ink. A layer of the striped paper from Wicked Fun Specialty designer paper is attached to Rich Razzleberry at both the top and bottom with machine stitching. Don't you love how perfectly straight the scallop edge is? Want to know my secret? I punched out three flowers out of card stock using the Fancy Flower Extra large punch. Then I cut off two scallops at a time and laid them side by side. Cute, huh?

The cute little witch is stamped in black Staz-on onto Whisper White card stock and is colored in with markers. The sentiment is stamped on a piece of Old Olive card stock that has been punched out with the new Decorative Label punch that was then cut in half.

My "buttons" were created using a 1/2" circle punch, a 1/16" circle punch, versamark ink and embossing powder. I love these flatter "buttons" for mailing. The card is topped off with a piece of Rich Razzleberry polka dot grosgrain ribbon that has the polka dots turned to the inside.

Amour Box

Hi friends!

Today I made a box to share with you. My pictures don't do it justice of course. I really need to improve my photography skills!

Anyway, this was a really fun project to put together. The box is made from a 6"x6" piece of black cardstock and a 6"x6" piece of designer series paper. Both sheets are scored at 1" on all sides, tabs cut on two sides and adhered to make the box shape.

I decorated the top of the box with the Artistic Etchings stamp set and some of the yummy new Cherry Cobbler seam binding that is available September 1st from the new Holiday Mini. Before adhering all the pieces to the top, the box received a light spritz of champagne shimmer mist. It is so pretty in person.

I overworked my score lines on the designer series paper and one of the corners tore a little bit when I was putting the top on. So I reinforced all four corners with the word window punch. It looks a bit like the bits of strapping on an old-fashioned suitcase and I love it!

New or old? Does it matter?

Hi friends!

Recently there was a discussion on one of my favorite stamping message boards about using up your stash of retired paper that really got me thinking. I LOVE buying and using new paper (and stamps, and accessories, and punches, etc.) as much as the next stamper! But what sometimes happens, at least with me, is that we buy so much new stuff and our "old" stuff gets shoved to the back of the closet or underneath all the new stuff. I have unearthed what was "new stuff" not long ago which is now retired and I never even opened the package! Please tell me this happens to other people too! I'm not alone in this, right?

I have decided that I really need to use what I love and that means that sometimes I will be using retired product. Most of the cards and projects I make can be adapted to any paper or any embellishments anyway. And while I would LOVE to sell new products to you, I also want to encourage you to use what you have. Use it in a different way than you ever thought you would. Try some color combinations that you think don't "go". Use some stamp sets that are in the back of your closet and pair them with some of your newer sets. Have some fun! Plus, remember that you can get a great deal on some retired items by checking out the Clearance Rack in my online store (link to my store is on the right sidebar). Of course if you must buy some new things too I'll never tell!

Today I put my money where my mouth is and I present my own version of a "hybrid" card. Only instead of mine being a hybrid of traditional and digital cardmaking, they are hybrids of new and old product.

Hi there! No, I haven't forgotten about my blog OR stamping! It seems like time is just going by way too quickly. I picked my daughter up from college in the middle of May and then we were on vacation. Since then I have been creating cards and sending them out in order to meet deadlines and keep forgetting to photograph my projects first.

Today I remembered and took a minute to take a picture before heading out to my great-niece's first birthday party!

This was a fun card to make since I just LOVE the Fox and Friends stamp set. I am so glad it was included in the new 2010-2011 Idea Book and Catalog!

The card base is Crumb Cake with a layer of Chocolate Chip on top of that. The squares are Melon Mambo and the images are stamped onto Whisper White with Pumpkin Pie and Chocolate Chip. I am making myself hungry typing this list!

The ribbon I used is no longer available (sob!) but there are several ribbons in the new catalog that could be substituted.

Gift Card Holder

Happy Friday! GOOD Friday that is!

Today I want to show you another gift that will be in my daughter's Easter basket on Sunday morning. I love having an older "child" because she will appreciate this gift even if it's not toys or candy! It's holding a gift card to a college girl's heaven.... Starbucks!

It is made from a sheet of card stock cut to 4 1/4" x 11" and scored at 4 1/4" and 8 3/4". After I folded it, I embossed the flap using the Petals a Plenty embossing folder and the Big Shot. I sponged over the top of the embossed area with ink to really make the flowers stand out. I took another piece of card stock and stamped the little bird and then colored it in. I punched a slot for the gift card using the Word Window punch.

Since there is no slot or other way of keeping the holder closed, I made a band out of coordinating designer series paper that slides down over the top and then made a flower using designer series paper and the scallop circle punch.

My lighting was not the best when I was taking these photos and the card looks way more awesome in person.

Easter Boxes

These are two boxes I made that will be appearing in my daughter and her friend's Easter baskets next week! I have no idea what will be in them, but most likely either Hershey's nuggets or mini jelly beans.

Each box was made using the Matchbox die, cardstock and Sweet Pea Designer Paper. Such an easy way to get a functional item that looks really cute! I hope they like them and I hope you do too!

Paper Flower bookmark

I have been seeing these paper flowers everywhere and decided to try some for myself. They are so much fun to make!

First, I punched out six scalloped circles with my punch from Very Vanilla card stock. I then folded, crushed, unfolded, folded again until I got a lot of good texture on each one. You can also spritz these lightly with water to make the folding easier but I didn't in this case. Once all the pieces have been wadded up, carefully unfold each one and lay them on top of each other.

Using my paper piercer, I made a hole through all six layers and inserted a silver brad through the hole and fastened it. Starting with the top layer, I brought up each layer into the center, crimping and folding to make it as tight as possible, repeating with all the layers. After I got all the layers pulled up into the center, I started gently separating the layers back out.

I used two markers, Ruby Red and Cameo Coral and just made random marks into the various layers of the flower. Then I spritzed the whole thing with the shimmer mist I made using rubbing alcohol and Champagne Mist shimmer paint. It is hard to see in the photo but doing that made the marker run a bit, blending the colors together and also making the flower fairly stiff to hold it's shape. It also gave a really nice, subtle shimmer to the flower. Two leaves were cut from Old Olive card stock using the Birds & Blooms die cut.

The bookmark was cut from Ruby Red cardstock using the Two Tags die and my Big Shot. I then stamped the sentiment on the edge using Black Stazon ink, and stamped a flower using Versamark ink for a watermark look.

The flower is attached to the bookmark using pop up glue dots.

Sweet Pea Birthday for the guys

Today's card is another one using Sweet Pea Designer Paper. I love this paper and will be sorry to see it go at the end of April. Can you believe that's next month? Time is just flying by.

ANYWAY, this card has very little stamping on it. I stamped the presents using the Sale-A-Bration set Happy Moments (only available until March 31!) on three scraps of different papers from the Sweet Pea stack. I then cut out a box from each paper and re-assembled them on a piece of vanilla card stock. This is an easy way to get some very detailed "coloring" in your images. It is a technique that works well with line drawings. Give it a try!

I have noticed in looking back through some of my posts that I use the modern label and word window punches a LOT in my greeting cards. I guess if something's not broke, don't fix it! I love the way these two punches coordinate and make it really easy to make a simple greeting stand out.

Good morning!

Today's card is impossibly easy and quick to put together. Did you notice that there is only one stamp used on the whole thing?

For this card I simply adhered a piece of Designers Series Paper to the bottom part of my card, crumpled a narrow strip of cardstock for the flower stem, attached the felt pieces with glue dots, and stamped and punched out the simple birthday greeting. To make it even more special, I also decorated the flap of the envelope with the same paper. Quick and easy but oh-so-cute!

This could be switched up by making flowers our of some of the punches and actually stamping some flowers on the bottom of the card. Give it a try and see what you come up with!

Butterfly Birthday

Good morning!

Today's card was inspired by a card that I received in a swap. It is a birthday card for my Aunt Terri and I hope she liked it!

I am loving the Sweet Pea Designers Series paper! The colors are ones that I would never think to put together (well some of them are - I mean Chocolate Chip and Pretty in Pink? Fav combo ever) but they really work well together.

If you click on the photo to make it larger, you will see that I put Crystal Effects on the butterfly that is in the center of the scalloped element. It was a good way to add some dimension and shine to the card. In hindsight, I really wish I would have done the same thing to the butterfly that is on the flat part of the card. I think that would have been a nice touch. Next time!

Remember how I don't like naked envelopes? For this one I simply adhered the same patterned paper on the outside flap of the envelope with snail and trimmed the excess off. Easy!

Omigosh! I am SO in love with the monkey from the Fox and Friends stamp set! I just think he is the cutest little thing with his crooked smile and curly tail! Here is a bookmark that I made as one of my swaps for regionals. It looks really crooked but I think that is more due to my photography skills than my stamping skills! Although that's not to say nothing is ever crooked. "I meant it to be that way" is a valid saying!

Masculine Birthday Card

Thanks for joining me on the maiden voyage of this blog!

Today I would like to show you a masculine birthday card. Really the only thing making it masculine is the color scheme. This card could easily be changed up to a kid-friendly card or a more feminine card just by switching up the papers! I love versatility.
